{What's On Your Kindle?} Carole P. Roman on Grady Whill and the Templeton Codex

Templeton Academy- the superhero high school is finally open!

The prestigious academy is recruiting the best of the best to enroll in its student body.

The school is as mysterious as it is exclusive.

Grady Whill thinks there is nothing special about him to make the grade.

However, his best friend, Aarush Patel has been selected and thinks Grady has the right stuff.

Even school bully, Elwood Bledsoe is attending.

If Grady is fortunate enough to be picked, his guardian has forbidden him to attend.

Will a family secret prevent Grady from becoming the superhero he was destined to be?

“Roman’s writing is excellent: portraying wonderful, complex characters. Narrated by Grady, the story reveals his kindness and humor. (“Aarush lived in a smart home as opposed to my stupid home,” he tells readers). It also illustrates the lovely symbiotic friendship between Grady and Aarush, who protect each other from trouble and ridicule…With the book’s many touching, funny, and edge-of-your-seat moments, readers will be cheering to hear more from Grady.” Blue Ink Review

Welcome, Carole! Your Book, Grady Whill and the Templeton Codex, sounds absolutely awesome. Can you tell us the story behind that intriguing title?

I come from a family of authors. We were kicking around some ideas. My son was thinking about a story about a superhero high school but lost interest. I asked if he minded if I took the idea. I had always wanted to write a book in the first person and thought this would be perfect. He moved on to another subject, and I created Grady Whill and the Templeton Codex.

Can you tell us more about your main character, Grady Whill?

Grady is every fourteen-year-old I've ever known, including myself. He's sweet, filled with insecurities but has a thirst to know more. Both my sons have asthma, and I decided that Grady would have to deal with that as well.

Can you tell us about this superhero school, Templeton Academy?

Templeton Academy is in a secret location off the coast of the United States. The Templetons have discovered a secret codex that enables people to tap into their abilities to achieve the potential to do superhuman traits.

Doesn't every school have at least one school bully? Tell us about Elwood Bledsoe?

Elwood was friends with Grady when they were in grade school. Elwood went in one direction, Grady went in another. Elwood bullies Aarush, Grady's friend, putting Grady in the position of defending Aarush and others tormented by the jock. Elwood carries resentment that Grady chose Aarush, who is on the spectrum, over himself.

If this book were turned into a movie, who would you like to play Grady?

Finn Wolfhard from Stranger Things.

Where does this story take place and why did you choose that location?

I chose a town named Middlebury, which could be in the middle of any American state, much like Springfield is anywhere on the Simpsons.

Do you have any other projects in the works?

Just finished a new joke book, and three picture books, all due out in the coming weeks.  Giggles Galore will make a great stocking stuffer. Mrs. Rabbit's Friendsgiving and two other books should delight my younger audience.
