What was the inspiration behind Dime? What sparked the initial idea?
DIME was very loosely inspired by the
arrest of someone I know. He was arrested on a Caribbean Island and falsely imprisoned
for almost three years on circumstantial evidence. His plight gave me the idea
for DIME. I started with an outline for a much simpler story. Once I began writing DIME, after
about 100 pages, the story developed its own momentum. I tossed the outline and
discovered that the best ideas presented themselves when I was deeply immersed
in writing.
Where does this book take place and why did you choose that location?
Since the story was loosely inspired by an actual arrest, I chose a Caribbean Island. Curacao is located close to Venezuela, where the drug cartel is located.
Pierce is a practicing attorney in Miami. I live and practice
law in Miami, so the meetings that took places in diners, restaurants and
hotels were all places that I’ve been to. As for the remainder of the locations
in the book they all have strategic significance that are explained in the
story.
Can you give us the lowdown on your main character, Pierce Evangelista?
A close friend of mine that read DIME, described Pierce Evangelista as a James Bond type with a Harvard Law degree. Pierce can’t resist and will never back away from a challenge. No stage or challenge is too big for him.
He’s a brilliant lawyer. Pierce is widely regarded by his peers as one of the most connected lawyers in the country. However, he has never forgotten his roots and often takes on causes representing David against Goliath.
In his first year at his law firm, the
management committee insisted that he go through the training program for all
young lawyers, the head of the firm told the committee “You
don’t make Da Vinci
or Michelangelo go to art school. You put a brush in their hands and
let them paint.”
Pull up page 66. What is going on in that scene?
Pierce has just arrived in Curacao. He is preparing to meet with Juan Carlos in the prison for the very first time. In this scene, the local lawyer hired to assist with the extradition hearing, tells Pierce that the hearing is a formality. The Dutch government wants nothing to do with inevitable conflict brewing and Juan Carlos will be extradited.
How do you want your readers to come away after reading your book?
I hope that my readers will come away highly entertained and feeling satisfied with the outcome of the story. After reading DIME, I hope that my readers will be excited to read about Pierce’s next case.
Do you have other books?
The
second Pierce Evangelista book which will be published later this year is Breaking
Arrows, a courtroom battle and legal thriller involving a small Indian
tribe’s fight against a corrupt system. After his grandson dies swimming in a
contaminated pond, Jeremiah Tiger, Chief of the Kialegee, knows he can no
longer sit by and allow his tribe to barely survive. For any chance at a
future, the tribe needs to reclaim what is rightfully theirs and push back on
300 years of oppression. Jeremiah enlists Pierce Evangelista, to fight the
State of Oklahoma, and the U.S. Department of Justice in a series of fiercely controversial legal battles. To further complicate matters
for Pierce, he has his hands full with a powerful Indian tribe hell-bent on
subjugating the Kialegee tribe and the chief’s daughter, a beautiful,
controversial fire brand.
